Ometh Abeyrathne
Data Science and AI Engineer
AKA Zerone Brianstorm
I build AI systems for a living, and take computers apart for fun: old MacBooks, GPUs, kernels, shells and the occasional neural network on a microcontroller.

Me
About
These are the technologies and activities that keep me up at night.
I'm a self-taught coder who thrives on the thrill of breaking things, fixing them, and sometimes building something entirely new. It's like my version of digital LEGO!
I work as a Data Science and AI Engineer at iTelaSoft, and I started Zerone Laboratories, the name most of my own projects go out under.
- GenAI / ML
- Exploring the world of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
- IoT
- Creating connected devices and smart home automation.
- Retrofitting
- Modernising old hardware with new technology.
- Hardware fixing
- Troubleshooting and repairing electronics and computers.
- Making stuff cool
- There should be a cool factor for everything.
Work 02
Hardware Tinkering
Machines I've opened, rewired or taught new tricks.
- ztOSA phone operating system with Windows Phone 8.1's look and motion, on Arch Linux ARM and mainline Linux, running on a Galaxy S9, with its own shell, apps, SDK and an image builder for other phones.
- ProjectMBPTwo old MacBook Pros turned into daily Linux machines, and everything I wrote to make that work: GPU hot-switching, a performance daemon with a neural network in it, a wall of hardware instruments and a native WhatsApp client.
- Project VISUMA skincare kiosk you control by moving your hand in the air, using an Xbox Kinect's depth camera. I wrote the engine that makes the gesture control work.
- TufA15Making an ASUS TUF A15 behave: a keyboard that flashes colours as you type shortcuts, and a now-retired power daemon that froze the whole system when the lid closed.
- StargateMy first desktop, built at 17: a central computer that ran the media, the web server and the room's lights and fans, on an operating system I put together myself.
Work 03
AI
Engines, agents, experiments and networks written from nothing.
- MicroNetA neural network library in C++ small enough to run on an ESP32 microcontroller, and the end of a long habit of writing networks from scratch.
- RIGELAn open-source engine for building AI assistants and agents: several language-model backends, tools, memory, voice, and a way for the rest of the desktop to talk to it.
- RIGEL RuntimeA zsh environment with RIGEL built in: ask questions, run multi-step tasks, speak and transcribe, all from the command line.
- SkyNetAn experiment in running one language model across many machines, by splitting the neurons of its feed-forward layers between them.
- Abstract Coding InterfaceA VS Code extension where you write pseudocode and a small local model turns it into real code, one block at a time.
- Runtime ShellTell the computer what you want in plain language and it runs the commands. Two versions, from 2023 and 2025.
- MetavallomenosAn experiment: can a small language model keep learning from the people who use it, the way a person does, mistakes included?
- SuperContextA shared memory for AI agents: one knowledge base that many agents and people write to and search, so context isn't lost between them.
- UniAssistA study tool for Linux: select some text, press a shortcut, and get an explanation drawn from your own course notes, as a notification.
- ImageSearchSearch a folder of pictures by describing what you're looking for. A small vector search built on CLIP.
- University research assistantA research project at NSBM's computing faculty: an assistant that answers course questions from a local knowledge base, running on an ordinary GPU.
Work 04
Cool Projects
Things built because they'd be cool to have.
- ZrnDotMatrixAn Android home screen drawn entirely in LED dots. The clock, the battery, your music and your apps are all lit dots on black.
- FlaSSHAn SSH client that doesn't lag when you type. Mankind deserves a less infuriating SSH experience.
- TermUIUse a terminal as your phone's home screen. Termux, tmux and a launch command, in place of icons.
- Flux ShellA terminal interface for querying InfluxDB: an editor, a results table and a history, without leaving the keyboard.
- SimulationsTwo small programs that draw mathematics: the Lorenz attractor, and the value of pi found by throwing random points.
